Friday Freebie: The Magnificent 12: The Call, Cry Uncle, A Kiss of Adventure

It's Friday and that means a freebie from Barnes and Noble, and this time its a kids freebie. The book is 'The Magnificent 12: The Call with Bonus Material' by Michael Grant and features a preview of the second book in the series. This book is a middle grade book that will also appeal to fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc. The book is given 3.5 Stars by Goodreads reviewers. Here is the synopsis from the Sony Reader Store.
Mack MacAvoy suffers from a serious case of mediumness. Medium looks. Medium grades. And with a list of phobias that could make anyone crazy, Mack never would have guessed that he is destined for a more-than-medium life.

And then one day a three-thousand-year-old man named Grimluk appears and delivers some startling news: Mack is one of the Magnificent 12. An evil force is on its way and it's up to Mack to track down eleven other twelve-year-olds to stop it. He will battle the wicked Ereskigal, also known as Risky. But Risky sounds a little scary and Mack doesn't want to be a hero. Will he answer the call?

The book is available in several formats as a freebie this week. You can pick up at any of these formats.

I found some more ebook freebies. The first book is 'Cry Uncle' by Judith Arnold. This is a romance with a bit of suspense thrown in. Pamela witnesses a murder and the suspect wants to eliminate the possibility of her testimony damaging him. She flees to Florida and goes into hiding by entering into a 'marriage of convenience'. The book rates 3.56 stars at Goodreads. Here is the synopsis.

After witnessing a professional hit, Seattle architect Pamela Hayes has testified in court against the hit man. Unfortunately, a mistrial is declared and the hit man is released on bail while awaiting a new trial. He intends to silence the sole witness to murder—Pam—before that new trial begins. She needs to hide, and she runs as far as she can: to steamy Key West., Florida.

Jonas Brenner, a Key West bar owner and easy-going slacker, is about to lose custody of his orphaned five-year-old niece—unless he can convince the courts that he’s a responsible father. What he needs is a prim and proper wife who will create the illusion that Lizard, as his niece likes to be called, is being raised in a stable environment.
What Pam needs is a new identity. Joe offers her a deal: if she marries him and takes his name, no Pacific Northwest hit man is going to find her. In return, she can pose as Joe’s respectable wife, dutifully caring for the rambunctious, feather-wearing Lizard.
Of course, this will be a marriage in name only. No sex. No emotions. No love. Which, once Pam and Joe move in together and the sparks begin to fly, is easier said than done.

You can pick it up as a freebie for either these formats.

The second book is 'A Kiss of Adventure' by Catherine Palmer. This is a Christian romance and, as the title suggests, also an adventure. Tillie meets up with an adventurer, Graeme, who works to prevent her kidnapping. The synopsis does not make the book sound particularly interesting but the Goodreads reviews liken this to an Indiana Jones adventures. The book rates 4.17 stars at Goodreads, so be sure to read the reviews there. Here is the Barnes and Noble synopsis.

Desperate and on the run, Tillie Thornton finds herself in an uneasy partnership with Graeme McLeod, a daring adventurer who comes out of nowhere to thwart the plot of Tillie’s would-be kidnappers. Now these two must join forces against their common enemies, as well as the challenges of nature, as they embark on a quest that could bring them the answers they seek—or cost them everything.
Formerly published as The Treasure of Timbuktu.
