Wondrous Words Wednesday - Feb 10, 2016

It’s Wednesday and that means it’s time to learn some new words! Wondrous Words Wednesday, hosted by Kathy at Bermuda Onion, is a meme which encourages us to share words we have learned while reading. The words I share will sometimes be completely new to me, and other times they will be words I am familiar with, and maybe even use correctly, but when I think about how to explain the meaning, I’m lost — I have to look it up. It’s all about expanding my vocabulary!

I’m STILL working on words from  The Witch of Lime Street by David Jaher. I’m learning a lot of new vocabulary from this one! Here are some of the ‘new-to-me’ words I came across this week.

mountebank - a person who tricks or cheats other people

seccubus - a demon assuming female form to have sexual intercourse with a men in their sleep

panegyrics - formal or elaborate praise

sepulchral - very sad and serious; very dismal or gloomy

legerdemain - skill in using your hands to perform magic tricks

What new-to-you words have you discovered this week?

  1. A couple of those words are familiar to me but they're not words I would ever think to use. Mounteback is totally new to me and I'm curious about it's pronunciation because I think I can use it. Thanks for playing along!

  2. I know seccubus. I think I learned it in high school from my friends -- you can imagine how exciting that was for us.

I looked up sepulchral once, and actually remembered it since it's related to sepulcher.

The rest are new -- thanks!

  4. Three out of your five are brand new to me. I think you misspelled mountebank. (It's an n instead of a c.) I occasionally read historical romances and almost every story has a mountebank - you know, the bad guy who twirls his mustache at the pretty girl.

    1. You are so right; thank you! I actually have it right on my 'vocabulary' sheet, but apparently I didn't take the time to double check!
