Here is a synopsis of ‘Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to NOT Reading' from Goodreads, where it rates 3.96 stars.
Charlie Joe Jackson may be the most reluctant reader ever born. And so far, he’s managed to get through life without ever reading an entire book from cover to cover. But now that he’s in middle school, avoiding reading isn’t as easy as it used to be. And when his friend Timmy McGibney decides that he’s tired of covering for him, Charlie Joe finds himself resorting to desperate measures to keep his perfect record intact. This is the hilarious story of an avid non-reader and the extreme lengths to which he’ll go to get out of reading a book.
My Review
Charlie Joe’s Tip #1
If you have to read a book, make sure it has short chapters.
page 6, Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to NOT Reading
I just looked at the previous chapter and realized it was way too long. I just ignored Charlie Joe’s Tip #1!
Sorry about that. It won’t happen again.
Chapter 5, Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to NOT Reading
This is such a funny book! If you have a middle school reluctant reader, you are sure to identify with this book. I had to actually go look up the author to be sure it wasn’t my reluctant reader writing under a pen name!
It’s not that Charlie Joe CAN’T read, and he is a smart boy. He just chooses to NOT read! He goes to quite a bit of work keeping his record of NOT reading in tact! He reads the first and last chapter and pays a friend, in ice cream sandwiches, to read the rest of the book and fill in the blanks! And sometimes the friend’s synopsis takes almost as much effort to get through as reading the book would be.
If you have a reluctant reader, give him this book. If he won’t read it, start reading it aloud to him. I guarantee, hard as he tries not to, you are going to get a snicker or two out of him!
My Rating: ★★★★ 4 Stars
