Port of No Return Book Tour and Giveaway

Port of No Return by Michelle Saftich

Publication Date: July 31, 2015
Odyssey Books
eBook & Paperback; 244 Pages
Genre: Historical Fiction

Contessa and Ettore Saforo awake to a normal day in war-stricken, occupied Italy. By the end of the day, their house is in ruins and they must seek shelter and protection wherever they can. But the turbulent politics of 1944 refuses to let them be.

As Tito and his Yugoslav Army threaten their German-held town of Fiume, Ettore finds himself running for his life, knowing that neither side is forgiving of those who have assisted the enemy. His wife and children must also flee the meagre life their town can offer, searching for a better life as displaced persons.

Ettore and Contessa's battle to find each other, and the struggle of their family and friends to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of a devastating war, provide a rich and varied account of Italian migration to Australia after World War II.

What can you do when you have nowhere left to call home? Port of No Return considers this question and more in a novel that is full of action, pain and laughter รณ a journey you will want to see through to the very end.

Port of No Return is the first novel in a series of two.

Cover Reveal: The Fortune Teller

The Fortune Teller
by Gwendolyn Womack

Release Date: June 6, 2017
Picador USA
eBook & Paperback; 320 Pages
Genre: Fiction/Romantic Suspense

FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE MEMORY PAINTER COMES A SWEEPING AND SUSPENSEFUL TALE OF ROMANCE, FATE, AND FORTUNE.

Semele Cohen appraises antiquities for an exclusive Manhattan auction house, specializing in deciphering ancient texts. And when she discovers a manuscript written in the time of Cleopatra, she knows it will be the find of her career. Its author tells the story of a priceless tarot deck, now lost to history, but as Semele delves further she realizes the manuscript is more than it seems. Both a memoir and a prophecy, it appears to be the work of a powerful seer, describing devastating wars and natural disasters in detail thousands of years before they occurred.

The more she reads, the more the manuscript begins to affect Semele’s life. But what happened to the cards? As the mystery of her connection to the manuscript deepens, Semele can’t shake the feeling that she’s being followed. Only one person can help her make sense of it all: her client, Theo Brossard. Yet Theo is arrogant and elusive, concealing secrets of his own, and there’s more to Semele’s desire to speak with him than she would like to admit. Can Semele even trust him?

The auction date is swiftly approaching, and someone wants to interfere—someone who knows the cards exist, and that the Brossard manuscript is tied to her. Semele realizes it’s up to her to stop them: the manuscript holds the key to a two-thousand-year-old secret, a secret someone will do anything to possess.

Review: The Secrets of Lizzie Borden

The Secrets of Lizzie Borden
by Brandy Purdy

Why did you choose this book? I have always been intrigued by Lizzie Borden
When did you read this book? January 2016
Who should read this book? readers of historical fiction or crime stories
Source: Brandy Purdy (the author)
Here is a synopsis of The Secrets of Lizzie Borden from Goodreads

In her enthralling, richly imagined new novel, Brandy Purdy, author of The Ripper’s Wife, creates a compelling portrait of the real, complex woman behind an unthinkable crime. Lizzie Borden should be one of the most fortunate young women in Fall River, Massachusetts. Her wealthy father could easily afford to provide his daughters with fashionable clothes, travel, and a rich, cultured life. Instead, haunted by the ghost of childhood poverty, he forces Lizzie and her sister, Emma, to live frugally, denying them the simplest modern conveniences. Suitors and socializing are discouraged, as her father views all gentleman callers as fortune hunters. Lonely and deeply unhappy, Lizzie stifles her frustration, dreaming of the freedom that will come with her eventual inheritance. But soon, even that chance of future independence seems about to be ripped away. And on a stifling August day in 1892, Lizzie’s long-simmering anger finally explodes… Vividly written and thought-provoking, The Secrets of Lizzie Borden explores the fascinating events behind a crime that continues to grip the public imagination—a story of how thwarted desires and desperate rage could turn a dutiful daughter into a notorious killer.

My Review

I picked this one up for a few reasons. The Lizzie Borden story has always intrigued me; did she or didn’t she? Also, I had previously read and enjoyed The Ripper’s Wife by the same autho, so when she offered me a review copy of her book, of course I said YES! This one was not a disappointment. I enjoyed The Ripper’s Wife very much, but I liked this one even more!

I want to start by saying that there are a few readers who should bypass this one. If you are squeamish, be warned; there is a lot of blood in this book. If you prefer your novels ‘clean’, this one may not be what you are looking for; Lizzie enjoys sex and has a vivid imagination. If you expect a recounting of the known HISTORY of the story, you will probably want to look for a book tagged as nonfiction. If none of these things have dissuaded you, read on.

The author has taken what was known about the Lizzie Borden case and used her imagination to weave a story that was hard to put down! I really like how from the very beginning of the novel, we get inside Lizzie’s head and learn what motivates her and how she thinks. She is an interesting character and her interpretations and ability to rationalize her actions is fascinating.  She almost had me convinced her actions were justified!

Another thing I really like about this novel is the descriptive writing. The author paints pictures with her words. Here is one example from early in the book:

“I was beautiful only in my dreams, inspired by the romantic novels I devoured, where I dwelled in splendid castles and danced through life in my lover’s arms in sorbet- and candy-colored dresses of the latest Parisian fashion with my fiery red hair piled up in mounds and masses of curls entwined with silk ribbons, diamonds, and pearls.”

The characters themselves are not particularly likeable. Though I sympathized with Lizzie’s stepmother, Abby, her father was a cold, manipulative person, always in search of more money. Her older sister was also quite manipulative and a strong influence on Lizzie at a young age. It’s easy to see how Lizzie grew up to also be manipulative.

I think this would make a great selection for book clubs! Discussions might include Lizzie’s relationships with her parents and sister, the motivations for her actions, her ability to justify her actions, and many other topics!

About the Author

GK Holloway

I have been interested in history since I was a boy, which I suppose explains why, when I came across a degree course in History and Politics at Coventry University that looked tailor made for me, I applied right away.

In my first year at Coventry I lived in the halls of residence within a stoneรญs throw of the Leofric Hotel. In the opposite direction, just a short walk from my halls, is the bell tower that houses a clock, which when its bell chimes the hour, produces a half size model of naked Lady Godiva riding a horse for the titillation of tourists. Above her, Peeping Tom leans out of a window for a better view. In all of the three years I was there, it never once occurred to me that I would one day write a book featuring Earl Leofric and his famous wife, as key players.

After graduating I spent a year in Canada before I returned to England to train as a Careers Officer in Bristol. Later, I lived and worked in Gloucestershire as a Careers Officer and then in Adult Education as an Education Guidance worker.

After I met my wife, I moved back to Bristol to live and I worked at Bath Spa University as a Student Welfare Officer for a number of years. It was about this time I read a biography about King Harold II which fascinated me so much I read more and more about the man and the times. I found the whole pre-conquest period of England so interesting I couldnรญt understand why no one had written a novel about it. So, I decided to write one myself. Now, after many years of study and time spent over a hot keyboard, I have finally produced that novel.

1066: What Fates Impose is the result of all that study and hard work and is the first book Iรญve written. I am now working on a sequel.
