I finished it! It took me three months, but I did it. I was slowed down by all the songs bursting out in my head, and all the times I watch Hamilton on Disney Plus. There's no point to reviewing this, because there is nothing I can add to what has already been said. If you enjoyed the musical, or just enjoy biographies—read it. Don't be intimidated by the length. Plan on it taking awhile. Even it is only 15 pages a day, read them and savor them. It is worth it!

Nonfiction November Week 3 - Ask The Expert

It’s Week 3 of Nonfiction November. If you haven’t read my previous Nonfiction Novemeber posts you can read Week 1 here and Week 2 here.

This week is ‘expert’ week. The discussion is being hosted by Kim at Sophisticated Dorkiness. Here’s the prompt for the week.

Be The Expert/Ask the Expert/Become the Expert: Three ways to join in this week! You can either share 3 or more books on a single topic that you have read and can recommend (be the expert), you can put the call out for good nonfiction on a specific topic that you have been dying to read (ask the expert), or you can create your own list of books on a topic that you’d like to read (become the expert).

I am choosing to ‘Ask The Expert’. I have an ongoing project to read my way through the U.S. presidents. My goal is to read at least one book about each U.S. president or his presidency. So far, I’ve not done very well with that one. Unless you count books I read many years ago, I’ve read exactly one book towards my goal; Destiny of the Republic about James A Garfield, (but it was a good one!).

So now I am putting the call out—I need recommendations for books about presidents. I prefer these to be narrative nonfiction, well researched, but not overly long. I want to get a feel for the man and his presidency, and the issues that shaped him. If you’ve read a book about one of the U.S. presidents that you enjoyed, please leave me a comment with the name of the book. I’m looking forward to finding lots of recommendations!

But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back.

But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what hap­pened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in tur­moil. The unhinged assassin’s half-delivered strike shattered the fragile national mood of a country so recently fractured by civil war, and left the wounded president as the object of a bitter behind-the-scenes struggle for power—over his administration, over the nation’s future, and, hauntingly, over his medical care. A team of physicians administered shockingly archaic treatments, to disastrous effect. My Review

I’ve had a goal of reading at least one book about each of our Presidents for a couple of years now, but for some reason never actually started on it. I think maybe it’s because I felt like I should read them in order. Then I saw this book mentioned, and the cover attracted my eye. I really knew next to nothing about President Garfield; I knew he was one of the four presidents who were assassinated, but nothing beyond that, including how short his time in office actually was.

The synopsis was interesting and I was hooked from the first page. I took my time reading because I wanted to absorb what I was reading, but I also couldn’t wait to find out what happened next! James Abram Garfield was a fascinating man who never really planned to become the President of the United States, but when nominated he felt like it was his duty to accept. He never seemed completely comfortable with the nomination.  Sadly, he was shot just a few months into his presidency. Even injured he was a stoic man and concerned at least as much about the future of his family and his country as he was with his own fate.

President Garfield lingered for several months before succumbing to his injury. It was interesting to me to learn that his death was primarily due not to his injury, but to the treatment of the injury by doctors who rejected ‘modern’ germ theory and considered sterile techniques a waste of time! It was also interesting to see how well-loved the President was by his countrymen; a bit of a surprise to me when I realize most Americans today know very little about him. We also learn about the assassin and his motivation for the shooting.

Also interesting were some of the parallels to politics today with the infighting during the party conventions and the backbiting and vicious political ambition. Garfield appears to be an exception; a decent man of honor who first concern was to serve and unite his country. I really have to wonder how our history many have been different had President Garfield lived to serve his full term.

This was a fascinating read to me and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys history or wants to learn more about one of our lesser recognized Presidents!

U.S. Presidents Project

As I was working on my wrap-up post for Bloggiesta this past weekend, I realized there is one more personal challenge I want to share with you. I’m not sure calling this a challenge is quite appropriate, though it certainly will be a challenge. This is more like a long-term project. I hope to work my way through the U.S. Presidents and read at least one book about each. This book may be a biography, and autobiograhy, or even a book about his (or her???) presidency or the events that occurred during the presidency. It may also include a book authored by a president, or I branch off to read about the respective lady. I am not restricting myself to only one book per president.

All of that is to say that this is not ‘challenge’ that I have any expectation of completing in 2016, or even 2017! In fact, I expect this project to extend many years, possibly decades. I will be tracking my progress, so if you are interested at any time, just check on the ‘U. S. Presidents Project’ tab above.
