Tuesday Memes: Losing Touch

Every Tuesday Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea hosts First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where you can share the first paragraph, or a few, of a book you are reading or thinking about reading soon.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!

Today I am spotlighting Losing Touch by Sandra Hunter.

After Indian Independence Arjun brings his family to London, but hopes of a better life rapidly dissipate. His wife Sunila spends all day longing for a nice tea service, his son suddenly hates anything Indian, and his daughter, well, that’s a whole other problem. As he struggles to enforce the values he grew up with, his family eagerly embraces the new. But when Arjun’s right leg suddenly fails him, his sense of imbalance is more than external. Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, he is forced to question his youthful impatience and careless cruelty to his family, until he learns, ultimately, to love them despite — or because of — their flaws. In a series of tender and touching glimpses into the shared life of a married couple, Sandra Hunter creates strikingly sympathetic characters — ones that remind us of our own shortfalls, successes, hypocrisies, and humanity.

Opening Paragraph

The viewing of the body has started. Arjun breathes in cold chapel air, looks around at his family, the Kulkanis, and friends of Kulkanis, and those married to Kulkanis. The family is large and loud and quarrelsome, but today they are a subdued queue, forming in front of the coffin. Jonti: beloved younger brother; quick with a line to make you laugh, quick-witted answers that found him an architect’s job in London, but not quick enough to outpace the disease that took him at thirty-two. Five years younger than Arjun. It is wrong.

My Teaser

He relaxes into his usual stride, enjoying the sheer physical pleasure of walking. The fall was nothing; just a small irregularity.

  3. I really like the beginning, it tells you quite a lot already about the family dynamics in the book! I recognize the sentiment in the teaser. Sometimes there's nothing better than feeling your body work after you've been ill! I hope you enjoy the rest of this one :) Thanks for sharing!

  10. I think this is going on my wishlist now. I like the idea that the family is losing touch with their culture when they move to London. This is a true situation that happens often to families, so I would like to see how the dynamics of the family undergo this situation. Thanks for sharing a new title to me.

    1. Typo. I meant MD (muscular dystrophy) instead of MS (multiple sclerosis).
